Dancing at Weddings

1.18.2008

Dancing at Weddings
takes the idea of a wedding reception music to new heights in this release. A concept album at heart, this Essex Chanel LP blends the genres of rock/indie with dance/electronica in a new way. Every song blends together like the different movements of a classical music piece, making the whole CD a work in itself. The packaging really puts on the finishing touches-the design is a faux wedding inviation, complete in an envelope, return card, and schedule of events. The music implements loops and sounds effects, at times very sparse and other time a texture of different timbres.  From the very beginning this album asks you to get physical, to Get Up and Dance!

The Album is Dead

Project

5.5.07 - present

The Album is Dead has been an attempt to release music in a completely new way. Through successive generations of media, the way music is presented and obtained by people has changed rapidly. The Album is Dead has attempted to let the listener enjoy in the creation of a Music Collection one track at a time.  The songs are released when they are completed (sometimes minutes after the final mix is approved). There isn't a marketing campaign with a date months in the future to coincide with the release of press materials, or copies of the album in stores. All songs are released online, for free.  The  Album is Dead is an anti-album, and has attempted to show there are other ways of accessing and sharing music.  This album is maybe a more refined version of the January 2007 project, spread out over time.

Cropcircles was done in a very short time frame. Written in the studio, it is very experimental in nature, with the songs very unique structurally and conceptually. This album has a cohesive sound that centers on vocals, slide guitar, bass, and the bulbul tarang, and sounds very different than other Essex Chanel albums.  Less polished and more spontaneous, this album's songs get better as the CD progresses.

Most of this album was recorded after 67 Car Commercials and before the January 2007 project.  Almost all of the songs were recorded from scratch in the studio, as a kind of in-process way of working, instead of having songs already written that needed to be recorded.  This process led to some very diverse songwriting with quite a few very good songs, including one of Essex Chanel's best, American Dream.  29 songs were recorded during the sessions, and 19 were put on the final CD.

January 2007

Month Long Project

January 2007

In this project, a song was written, recorded, mixed, and posted in the same day for the entire month of January.  32 total songs (2 for the last day) were completed.  It's hard to have enough creativity to write a song everyday, especially living and working as most of us do. Travis was working full time 9-5 Monday through Friday, so not only did he did he have to write a song every day with limited time, but he had to have enough energy to try to get a quality recording of it.  Many days he had to write a half dozen songs until there was something good enough to be recorded. Sleep was a resource that was as important as time, and for each there wasn't much. Travis's studio when making January 2007 didn't have heat in the winters, which proved to create some problems because during January 2007 there was a cold spell and Travis recorded songs in temperatures that were just above 34 degrees (it was so cold his space heaters couldn't warm up the room very much). This project shows Travis's high level of creativity, his ability to create under difficult circumstances, and his ability to try new things and not be afraid to fail at them. All the songs aren't successes, but some of them are really gems.  For those lucky enough to have known about the project, each day you were presented with a newly written, recorded song that you could download from the website for free. No matter what went on in the world, or in your life, you knew there was going to be a new Essex Chanel track that was freshly made that day. Some songs directly related to the events of that day, such as Thursday Morning, Place Kicker Extraordinaire (about The Bears place kicker Robbie Gould), or it sucks being single when it's snowy outside. Now if you listen to the songs from start to finish, you can experience the project in its entirety, a month in time, recorded in songs. Several people came in and played with Travis on the songs. Travis made & produced a video for January 27th 2007 - It Doesn't Seem like I'm As Old As I Am, which showed him playing each recorded part for the songs. This was the first Essex Chanel video, and the first time in a long time Travis worked in video. There's quite a few really good songs that came from this project, and proof that you can do something  that is quite difficult if you put your mind to it.

67 Car Commercials

This light-hearted album consists of 67 songs meant to be used as car commercials.  Almost every song is 30 sec (a couple are 1 minute), and they genre jump from track to track.  Much more experimental and multi-instrumental than the previous Essex Chanel albums.  This album takes on a new meaning when put in a playlist or on an iPod, because they almost act as a real commercial break when played between longer songs and they pop up for 30 seconds unexpectedly. A BONUS EP was released 3.6.2007 that contains 7 more car commercials recorded with the original 67 that didn't make it on the album.

While working on 67 Car Commercials, Travis again needed a break from the grind of making an endless supply of 30 second songs.  Using a method similar to Spur of the Moment, Travis started from scratch in the studio and made this LP in 3 days.  All songs were written, recorded and produced Friday July 21st-Sunday July 23rd, 2006. Travis always had the idea to make a collection of songs being drunk, and he was drunk during most of the creation of this album, which led to the songs being even more off the wall, and at times wackier, than normal.

Spur of the Moment & Travis Wiggins Gets Drunk were packaged together and released on CD.

While working on 67 Car Commercials, Travis needed a break from the grind of making an endless supply of 30 second songs.  It was freeing to let his songwriting go and not worry about the length of a song. Travis wrote, recorded, and mixed this EP in one day.  The bass parts and synth really come out on this album, and show Travis's growth from a guitar player to a multi-instrumentalist.  The songs are lighthearted, and this EP leaves you hanging wanting much more.

Spur of the Moment & Travis Wiggins Gets Drunk were packaged together and released on CD.

Recorded before Travis's 26th birthday, for he felt he would always die during his 25th year, Essex Chanel's sophomore album is a smorgasbord of diverse songwriting. Travis's studio at the time consisted of 2 microphones, and he had been playing his newly aquired drumset since January 2006, which gives this album a very raw feel to it. The production and arranging really blossom from Siren, Essex Chanel's first album, and show us what's more to come. Travis chose all the best songs he had at the time and recorded them for this album.

The debut album of Essex Chanel and of Travis Wiggins's solo material.  At the same time he was recording Siren, Travis was in the band Fetla, recording a full length LP called So Patriotic.  Most of Travis's rock tracks went to So Patriotic, while the acoustic and softer treatments ended up here, on Siren.  Very guitar/vocal driven with some keyboards, this album was Travis's first dive into producing and recording on his own
